July update
Upcoming appearances, inaugural briefing for subscribers, and a summer discount offer
Thank you for reading Observing Japan. This post is available to all readers.
If you are looking for timely, forward-looking analysis of the stories in Japans’s politics and policymaking that move markets, I have launched a new service through my business, Japan Foresight LLC. For more information about Japan Foresight’s services or for information on how to sign up for a trial or schedule a briefing, please visit our website or reach out to me.
I will be launching a monthly conference call exclusively for paid subscribers. I would be interested in readers’ thoughts on how to format the conference call. Please share your opinions in the survey below.
Hello everyone,
We’re heading into the Fourth of July holiday weekend so things have slowed down a bit in the US — well, other than in US politics. I thought it would be a good time to do a little housekeeping for this newsletter.
First, I wanted to share some information about a Stimson Center webinar I will be participating in on Monday, 8 July from 9am-10am ET. As it will be the second anniversary of Abe Shinzō’s assassination, Miyake Kunihiko from the Canon Institute of Global Studies and I will be speak on a panel called “Revisiting the Legacy of Shinzo Abe,” moderated by Yuki Tatsumi from Stimson. You can register for the program here.
Second, I wanted to thank those of you who responded to the survey or otherwise reached out to me regarding a monthly briefing call for Observing Japan subscribers. My tentative plan is to hold the first briefing call on Tuesday, 16 July from 9:30am-10:15am ET (13:30 GMT/22:30 JST). I will send information with a Zoom link for subscribers next week. I may offer a brief opening presentation but my aim is to keep the call conversational.
Third, in honor of the start of the subscribers’ briefings, I am offering a limited time 20% discount on annual subscriptions. Purchase an annual subscription by 15 July and you’ll receive 20% of the $60 fee. Many thanks to those of you who have already purchased a subscription. Also a reminder that students with an email address from an accredited educational institution can get a subscription for $30 per year of $3 per month.
Finally, I thought I would share some updates on what readers can expect to see in the next few weeks. Despite the holiday in the US, I will still be publishing This Week in Japanese Politics for paid subscribers on Friday, though it will likely be shorter this week. In addition to analysis of the unfolding LDP leadership race and the Tokyo gubernatorial and legislative by-elections, readers can also look forward to a response to Richard Katz’s response to my review of his book The Contest for Japan’s Economic Future.
I have also been re-reading Chalmers Johnson’s classic MITI and the Japanese Miracle for a book project of my own — more about this later — and I am planning to do a series of posts as I re-read through the book.
Stay tuned for more information about the 16 July briefing call for paid subscribers. Subscribe now to take advantage of the discount and receive the invitation to the call!
